The high definition media war is finally over and Toshiba’s HD-DVD finally raises the white flag. Toshiba said it would stop promoting its HD DVD format for the next-generation DVD after losing the support of key studios and retailers to the Blu-ray technology backed by Sony.
Toshiba’s president, Nishida-san said that they are clearly in a good place until last December and January. Based on Nishida-san statement, it appears that the knock out punch came from Time Warner’s announcement on supporting Blu-ray instead of HD-DVD.
Overall, 730,000 units were sold worldwide and majority is in the US which 300,000 of those are Xbox 360 HD DVD drives. Microsoft’s PR Team already sent out a statement regarding these developments and the rumors about an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add on.

When Mortal Kombat burst onto the arcade scene in the early 1990s, many gamers were taken aback at how the characters looked like real people. Of course, they were real people, digitized and animated. In fact, the majority of the combatants were models of two brothers, Carlos and Daniel Pesina. Carlos provided the likeness for Raiden, and Daniel played Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Reptile.
Now the brothers Pesina are getting back into the game. The two will be featured in Dark Maze Studios’ game spoof Press Start. According to director Ed Glaser’s blog, the Pesinas will be playing roles that “pay homage to the game characters for which they are so well-known.”
Press Start doesn’t target one game for its low-budget slapstick, but games in general–from classics such as Donkey Kong to modern first-person shooters. However, much of the flick will get its material and gags from the days of 8- and 16-bit gaming. The movie centers on a youngster who, with the aid of a cranky ninja and hardcore space marine, must fulfill his destiny to save the world from a “tyrannical, but comically insecure, sorcerer.”
“What we lack in money,” said Glaser, “we make up for in poverty. So we’re running on passion and ingenuity.”
The movie is expected to be completed sometime this year.

It appears that software companies are taking advantage of the power from high end GPUs from Nvidia and ATI just like Microsoft did with the Windows Vista Operating System. Adobe’s latest version of Acrobat Reader has GPU acceleration built in. If you are wondering what GPU acceleration does to help Acrobat Reader 8, here is a brief explanation from Adobe’s website:
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 8 introduces a new feature called graphical processing unit (GPU) acceleration. This features enchances page display, zooming, and panning within PDF files. When Acrobat or Adobe Reader starts, it detects the properties of the video card and enables the Use 2D GPU Accerleration feature within Acrobat or Adobe Reader. The 2D GPU acceleration check box will only be visible if Acrobat or Adobe Reader detects a supported video card.
