Cable Cut Cripples Asia-Pacific Internet
Posted on | August 12, 2009 | 14 Comments
A cable cut in the Asia-Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) undersea submarine cable crippled Internet connection speed across the Asia-Pacific region.
PLDT, Globe, Smart and other local ISP are getting complaints from users due to slow connection speeds to sites hosted outside of the region. A Bayantel employee / mod even confirmed the problem over their support forum.
We would like to advise you that there is a major cable cut via APCN2 that affects all local carriers’ international telecommunication services including access to the Internet from the Philippines. You may experience some slowing down of your Internet connectivity for the duration of the said outage.
The cable fault was traced to segment 7 of the APCN2, which stretches between Shantou, China and Tanshui, Taiwan. The outage was traced to Typhoon Morakot, which hit the region over the weekend.
According to an advisory, Internet connection speeds are expected to return to normal late evening August 13.
Back in 2006, the APCN2 was taken out by a powerful earthquake in Taiwan. Internet access was severely affected in the Philippines and it took several weeks before normal Internet speed and connection was restored.
So how’s your Internet connection today?

Now wonder my internet connection is kinda slow today. I thought Globe broadband got screwed up again or something.
It’s a good thing new cables were laid out since the Taiwan quake, the impact of severed cables have become more manageable than before.

It’s still very slow. I’m an online teacher and my work gets really affected. I always use the Voip for most classes and I can’t hear the other side clearly huhuhu. My boss is very stupid and is telling me to fix the line. Tama ba yun? Kakainis talaga.

Hi Lloyd, My sister has a friend that works in China and Thailand and they Skype and email back and forth almost every day and had noticed a delay in the Skype. He finally told my sister about that cable having something to do with the problems they were having. I find it amazing how there are cables underneath the ocean it’s almost too much to fathom how they can fix cables underneath the ocean floor. I love your new theme btw it looks great. I also want to thank you so much for the tech help you have given me. Thanks again jj

Jj,
The last time a cable cut happened in Taiwan, it took several weeks to fix. Internet on most asian countries are affected.
Btw, glad you liked the design and I already replied to your inquiries.
Codecooke,
Same here. I guess my ISP made some re-routing and browsing is now tolerable.

I never felt the lapse in connection speed. May be it only affected those with higher speed plans.
