Photosynth released
Posted on | August 22, 2008 | 5 Comments
Microsoft officially released Photosynth to the public, allowing users to upload their images and generate their own Photosynth models. People can open an account (with a Windows Live ID) and begin creating “synths,” which require only a digital camera and an 8-megabyte software download.
Photosynth is a software from Microsoft Live Labs and the University of Washington that analyzes digital photographs to build a three-dimensional point cloud of a photographed object.
Photosynth was first demonstrated 2 years ago wherein the software arranges several photo sets in their real-world, 3-D context and allows people to navigate smoothly around the canals of Venice.
We’re pleased to announce the first full release of Photosynth, available now at photosynth.com. Photosynth takes a collection of regular photographs and reconstructs the scene or object in a 3-D environment. For those of you who have seen the videos or tried our tech preview, you could experience synths that we made in the lab and get a feel for what Photosynth is and how it works. But now, for the first time ever you can create synths from your own pictures and share them with your friends. Explore great synths from others or create a few of your own.

I already install this software. It is wonderful and great, seem like watching ‘minority report’ movie ( i think if have touch screen feature is better).
If this function apply to online photo sharing such as flickr,we will be able enjoy a better browsing with effective manner.

Hey lloyd, I’m not too sure what Photosynth is, way beyond my knowledge of all things technical. You said that you can take regular digital pictures and do you manipulate them to give them a 3d effect? Like I said I’m just not up on all of this new tech that is around. Have you ever thought of posting on a certain object or software and maybe give instructions on how to use it…I know I would love to learn about all of these new things that are out there. And you would be a good teacher… even if it’s something as simple as how to backup your work. You would be surprise how many people might not know how to do that. I do Now thanks to you.lol But there are alot of things you could teach all of us . Like if we had the Photsynth how do we use it and what would we use it for? Talk to you later, will get an email out to you this week. Hope you had a great Weekend!! Give it a thought “teacher Lloyd”…sounds good ah?

Photosynth is a nice software. I just tried it and got no problem so far. I think you should give it a try. It will replace windows image viewer soon.

Wongsk,
LOL! A touch screen is definitely better and I agree support for online photo sharing is a big plus.
JJ,
You already get the basic idea on how Photosynth works. It really hard for me to describe it in detail. I suggest you download Photosynth and try to see its features.
It’s really simple to use and you’ll be up and using it in less than 5 minutes.
Mike,
Personally, it’s has a long way to go before it replaces the image viewer.

Great post! Keep on with your good work. I’ll give it a try when I have some suitable photos.
