Microsoft has launched the new WorldWide Telescope, a free web-based program that puts together images from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory Center, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and others.
It allows users to zoom around the universe and browse through the galaxy on their own or take guided tours of different outer-space destinations developed by astronomers and academics.
The WorldWide Telescope is a rich visualization environment that functions as a virtual telescope, bringing together imagery from the best ground- and space-based telescopes to enable seamless, guided explorations of the universe. WorldWide Telescope, created with Microsoft’s high-performance Visual Experience Engine, enables seamless panning and zooming across the night sky blending terabytes of images, data and stories from multiple sources over the Internet into a media-rich, immersive experience.
It’s a 20mb download and its still on its beta phase so you might encounter some bugs here and there. Based from experience, it has the edge over Google Sky in terms of features.
