Skype today announced that the company has started offering unlimited overseas calling to selected countries. The new Unlimited World Plan gives you Unlimited calls to landlines in 34 countries worldwide for $12.95 per month while the Unlimited Country Plan allows you to have unlimited calls to landlines in the country of your choice in 34 destination countries worldwide for $5.95 per month.

Unfortunately, the Philippines was left out on the cold on Skype’s unlimited offering. Our OFW and kababayans abroad would really benefit from it if this becomes available. I don’t blame Skype if they can’t provide unlimited calling yet since they still need to pay fees to our local telcos for the interconnection on their telephone network. Hopefully, this will change in the future with some support from our government but for the meantime I’m sticking with Yahoo! Voice to call my family in the US.

Well if the rumours turn out to be true that Google takes over Skype, it’ll probably end up being free for everyone
(although I wonder if they’ll then introduce an AdVoice feature which recognises keywords you speak and then volunteers some ‘appropriate’ ads for you and your friends)
