Intel announced that “Atom” will be the name for a new family of low-power processors designed specifically for mobile Internet devices and a new class of simple and affordable Internet-centric computers arriving later this year.

Formerly, dubbed as the Silverthorn and Diamondville chips has a brand new name “Atom,” and the Menlow platform has become the “Centrino Atom”. Intel stated that the Intel Atom processor is based on an entirely new microarchitecture designed specifically for small devices and low power, while maintaining the Intel Core 2 Duo instruction set compatibility.

Atom is an in-order processor capable of issuing 2 instructions per clock cycle and supports two threads. It will be manufactured on Intel’s 45nm process with hi-k metal gate technology.

We’ll have to see how the architectures play out but without question Intel seems to have a power consumption edge over its competitors in the mobile arena namely AMD and VIA.

    Melo,
We have to give credit to Intel’s PRs though, they got a cool name for their new mobile processors.

    ayel,
These processors are not really meant for performance rather than mobility and low power consumption. It also depends on how CPU dependent your graphics designing will be but for a basic graphics design then these processors will do.
