You may have seen reports of Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 floating on the net by now. I stumbled a couple of links and torrents on several discussion boards but most of them are either RC1 (Refresh 1), Fakes or just plain old Trojans. Surely, a lot of people doesn’t want to wait several days to get a hold of their own copy and install it on there system.
For couple of days, the only people who can get a valid Vista Service Pack 1 are some beta testers and people who have an MSDN accounts. Luckily, several people made this available to the general public, so you don’t need to wait until March to get a hold of Vista Service Pack 1. You have two ways on getting the Service Pack.
Now, the first way is through this “hack” which was actually originated straight from Microsoft. It was given to beta testers on Connect last January 23rd that will allow them to download the Service Pack via Windows update.
According to Jeff DaVos, one of the many Windows Vista SP1 beta program leaders, that this is indeed the same release being used for RTM, and that “What you got is what we’re all running our Vista machines here internally - we definitely RTM’d”.
Windows Vista SP1 build 18000 is indeed the RTM build. We were hoping build 18000 we released to you (WU only) was the final build and as it happens we didn’t have to break the glass, the build didn’t change at all from the time we released it to you and our final sign-off on Monday morning this week.”,
Below is the procedures on downloading Service Pack 1 via Windows Update:
1) Run the .cmd file. It will automatically edit the registry that will enable you to download Vista SP1 via Windows update.
2) Go to Windows update and click Check for Updates. It will report a single file update which is around 4MB. Download and install it. Restart your computer when prompted.
3). Run Windows Update again then click Check for Updates. It will report another single update and this time it will be around 5MB. Do the same thing when you download the first update. Download and install then restart your computer when prompted.
4) Try to run Windows Update again. Windows Update should show the Vista Service Pack 1 (It will be shown as RC1) in the list. If it doesn’t, run Windows Update again after a few minutes. It will show you the file size of SP1 which is between 65MB to 534MB.
5) After downloading the Vista Service Pack 1, the system will start the actual install.
6) Once it finished the thing it needs to do, the PC will restart again. You will get the message below after the restart:
Installing Service Pack 1: Stage 1 of 3: 0%.
Do not turn off your computer.
7) Just wait for the Vista Service Pack 1 to be installed (Be patient). After stage 3, Windows will boot as normal. Check your System’s Properties and it should show the Service Pack 1 is installed.
To those people with doubts thinking that this is not the official RTM, please check the screen shot above. As you can see, the build number is 6.0.6001.180000 which is the same as the RTM build number.

The second way is through a direct download and is a “leaked” copy from MSDN. Vista Service Pack 1 downloads are available for both 32-bit and 64-bit version of Windows. I don’t know on how long this will be available, so grab it while its there.

I’m now running Windows Vista (Business) with Service Pack 1 now. For me, it appears much more responsive and I’m happy with the performance of my system.
Update: Added a torrent link and added a screen shot for the Vista System build

Kinda puzzled here. It seems I’ve already got this release installed. System info shows “Service Pack 1, v.668″
I’ve had this installed for at least 4 or 5 weeks now and always thought it was RC1.
I’ve just downloaded the above SP1 via the TPB torrent and it just tells me I’ve already got this installed! I still have the ‘Evaluation copy. Build 6001′ on the desktop.
So, are RC1 and RTM exactly the same?
February 15th, 2008 at 12:58 am
gloval,
Some people are also having problems downloading via Windows update. The cause might be either they installed an earlier SP1 RC and did not uninstall it or they have a version of Vista version with a language that is not yet supported.
pSy,
Depends on the RC build you got. SP 1 RC refesh 1 has a build number of 6.0.6001.17028. while refesh 2 is the one that went RTM that have a build number 6.0.6001.18000.
February 15th, 2008 at 1:18 am
Lloyd, many thanks for that - just checked the HAL on my exisiting SP1 install and it is in fact 6.0.6001.17052. The file linked to above on TPB is 17028 by the way… The plot thickens!
February 17th, 2008 at 12:48 am
February 17th, 2008 at 3:46 am
pSy,
You’re getting 17028 using the torrent? I already installed Vista SP1 on two other computers using the torrent on TPB and both have a build number 6.0.6001.18000 which is the same as the RTM.
One is using Vista Ultimate (clean install) while the other one is using a pre-loaded Vista Home Premium.
February 17th, 2008 at 5:32 am
LLoyd, I though I had already posted a follow up to this but it must have got lost along the way somehow.
Anyway, now I’ve installed the TPB SP1 it does correspond and is of course 6.0.6001.18000 - however the file properties say otherwise and this is what confused me. Right click the setup file and under details it says 17028!
Thanks for your help - I wouldn’t have pursued this otherwise and now have 7 happy SP1 installs - 3 Business, 2 Ultimate & 2 Premiums (5 in the office and 2 at home!)
February 17th, 2008 at 5:39 am
Ah ha! Now I see what your talking about. I checked the file and did see that the file version is 6.0.6001.17028. This is really confusing indeed. I guess MS forgot to update the file details or something.
Well, I’m happy to hear that your SP1 installs went smoothly.

Hi lloyd, is there an alternate link for the 64-bit version? It seems that the one posted is already dead
February 24th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
February 25th, 2008 at 4:55 am
Vinsanity,
Sorry bro, I can’t find a decent alternate link for the 64-bit version. I didn’t get a copy of it since I’m only running 32-bit.

Contains both 32bit and 64bit SP1 RTM’s - Tested and working, both 32 and 64, here.
I’m also now a convert to 64bit. It’s working good
& starting to feel like I’m getting some money’s worth for buying retail Ultimate…

This still won’t make me switch to Vista. I still find XP faster than Vista in some cases.
Altough this update does speed the Vista Up…

Thanks a lot Lloyd.I am able to get through successfully by just following your instructions on the website. But after running vista SP1 registry update I was directly able to d/l vista SP1 of around 65 MB.
Windows update did not show any 2 files of 4 MB & 5 MB. Did I do something wrong? But my system shows Vista SP1 build 6.0.6001.180000.
You are the Charm of this universe.
February 28th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Gringo Galisaso,
If you’re going to get SP1 via Windows update then yes, you need the registry updates.
vance,
A lot of people are still sticking with XP, so you’re not the only one. I did see an improvement after upgrading to SP1 and very much happy with it.
Anny,
Oh, shucks! I’m flattered. I’m glad that you were able to upgrade to SP1. Don’t worry about the 2 files, its either you already have it or MS decided not to include it anymore.
February 28th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
@lloyd True… hehe
By the way? Is this RTM version??? I read that the public version of SP1 will be out by Mid-march.

March 14th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
orangepanda,
Direct download links are already dead. Just use the torrent.
March 17th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Tried both the .cmd file and the .torrent file, none are working on my system. (32bit Vista Ultimate Swedish)
The .cmd file only added feature updates like “Windows Live Mail” and “Windows Live OneCare”. So I re-checked for updates and got back to showing “No avaliable updates”.
So I tried downloading the .torrent file and got the message that the Service Pack 1 could not be installed cause it does not support my language.
Crappy huh, guess I’ll just have to wait for the official release.. :[
March 17th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
André,
Unfortunately, swedish is not yet supported on the SP1 version above.
March 18th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Yeah, sure is a bummer with all the annoying BSOD’s I get on this system with Vista installed. I was hoping to trick the SP1 installation by downloading the English Language Pack and activating it as Default Language, without prevail thou.
March 19th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
Hello, a week ago I installed SP1 using the registry hack method. Now I see SP1 is available for everyone and I wonder is the one I installed was trully the final version, is there any way to verify it? did any of you do it already?
March 19th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
if i uninstalled the version i got with the hack, would the registry change still allow me to get the current version that is now released to the public?
March 20th, 2008 at 12:10 am
I just downloaded SP1 from microsoft, it has the same size of RTM, 434MB, but md5 checksum is different, it´s e230f3dcd78e462dbf1dd538fc70ff2a
March 20th, 2008 at 12:14 am
André,
MS have officially released SP1 on their public server. It should be a matter of time before they release SP1 with Swedish support.
Luis,
Check the build number of the system. It should atlease show 6.0.6001.180000
bobo,
AFAIK, it should allow you but its just a waste of time IMHO since your downloading the same thing. (same version).

jeff,
Vista SP1 has been officially launched. You can already get them directly from Microsoft website or thru WU.
