After much speculations, rumors, hype and the likes, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 goes Gold. Today, Microsoft announced that Vista SP1 has RTM’ed (Released To Manufacturers) and will be made available to the public in mid-March. Unlike previous service packs from Microsoft, Vista SP1 is more on bug fixes and performance enhancement rather than a “feature added” release.
Service Pack 1 is a very important milestone because it addresses many of the key issues that our customers have identified with Windows Vista over the last year both, directly and through programs like the Customer Experience Improvement Program. With Service Pack 1, we have made great progress in performance, reliability and compatibility.
Here’s the timing of Microsoft for SP1 availability for current Windows Vista users:
- Mid-March - Windows Vista SP1 will be release via Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and direct download.
- Mid-April - Windows Vista SP1 will be release via automatic updates
- Rest of April - the remaining languages will RTM
I’ve been using Windows Vista since I got my own copy of it last year though there were annoyances at first like UAC, lack of software supporting the OS, driver issues, etc. ; this has been fixed after a few months when manufacturers releases their updates to support the new OS.
I’m happy to say that I was quite satisfied with my Vista experience and this much awaited update will further improve its stability and reliability to its customers. I seriously doubt that people will wait till mid-March to get a hold of Vista SP1. If the trends will be the same, it will be available to the public via torrents in a matter of days.
For me, I’ll wait till the official download link is provided.
