Microsoft reminded solution providers and end users Wednesday that support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) will end Oct. 10. Customers running Windows XP SP1 must migrate to Windows XP SP2 over the next three months, or they will lose incident support. Microsoft also said it won’t release any more security updates for SP1 after that date.

During its monthly security briefing, Microsoft executives told customers to prepare their migrations over the summer. “I urge all customers to have plans ready for moving to XP SP2 as soon as possible,” said Stephen Toulouse, a security product manager at Microsoft. The original support end date for Windows XP SP1 was Sept. 17, 2006.

Bill Gates will be transitioning out of a day-to-day role in the running of Microsoft by July 2008 to spend more time on his global health and education work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Microsoft Corp. today announced. The two-year transition period will ensure a smooth and orderly transfer of responsibilities.

The Redmond-based company announced that Gates will continue in his role as Chairman, with Ray Ozzie (currently Chief Technical Officer) taking over the Chief Software Architect post with immediate effect. Craig Mundie, also a Chief Technical officer, will assume the newly-created role of Chief Research and Strategy Officer.

This was a hard decision for me,” Gates said. “I’m very lucky to have two passions that I feel are so important and so challenging. As I prepare for this change, I firmly believe the road ahead for Microsoft is as bright as ever.”

The worm, dubbed “Yamanner,” infected a recipient’s computer as soon as the toxic e-mail was opened. It then scanned contact lists for additional targets, according to security software maker Symantec.

Sony’s first Blu-Ray player is now expected to launch mid-August, two months later than originally suggested. According to the Sony Style website, the BDP-S1 will now ship “on or about August 15, 2006.” Priced at 1000 USD, the player was originally given a June 30th launch date.

Pioneer has also delayed the date for their player, the catchy titled BDP-HD1. It was expected to launch this month, but will now be released in September, at 1500 USD, 300 USD less than originally announced. The company cited “interoperability issues” as the reason for the delay.

We decided to hold off for bit just to make sure everything works well relative to all the various studios that are planning to ship BD titles,” commented Pioneer’s Andy Parsons. “Launching a new format is fairly big effort, and you have such a broad spectrum of capabilities with the media itself, including BD-Java, content protection layers and various authoring tools that are being brought up to speed.

The availability of Nforce 500 series media and communications processors will enable SLI configurations to Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme, which seem to be challenging AMD’s Athlon64 processors for the gaming crown.
