Exodus WhyReboot is a small (60KB) Windows application that displays a list of pending file operations that will occur after rebooting your computer. This is useful in determining why an installer has notified you that a reboot is needed.

Ever thrown a Western Digital hard drive into a campfire? Well, PCMag’s executive editor Jeremy Kaplan did while on his vacation. Why? He wanted to see if Ontrack could save his barbecued data.
For Ontrack, it was just another week at the office. Apparently the company recovers data from fire-damaged drives all the time. And that’s one of the easier tasks. In 2003, Ontrack engineers successfully recovered files from a drive that arrived in Minnesota with a bullet hole in it. A few weeks later, they salvaged a disk that had spent three months at the bottom of a lake.

We all know that the world’s magnetic field is weakening, but could it be because we are due for a magnetic field reversal? This would mean that animals might go the wrong way during migration or the fact that compasses might swing 180 degrees and point south. The magnetic shield might even disappear for a century or two.
